DISCLAIMER: Do not believe anything that I say!  Test everything that you read below against all verses in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh/OT) and the Brit Chadashah (NT).  Pray for the truth and to be led by the Holy Spirit (Ruach HaChodesh)!  I am not your pastor, preacher, teacher, rabbi, or anything else.  I am just a guy who has an opinion.

The Ruach HaChodesh (Holy Spirit)

I think one of the things that most people do NOT do is pray for the Holy Spirit (Ruach HaChodesh) to lead them before they open their Bible to read.  Not only should you pray before reading HIS word, but you should pray for the Ruach to lead you in all things, especially wisdom and understanding.  If we are reading HIS word, wouldn’t HE be the one who knows what it means?

What is the Holy Spirit (Ruach HaChodesh)?  This is a subject for a different time, but it is an important question.  Consider it the power of GOD (YHVH) that is within you and leading you.  This is a very limiting answer, but it will suffice for now.  The Ruach, among other things, will lead you into understanding and wisdom.  It will guide you to HIS truth.  It will give you discernment.

Let’s look briefly at times where the Ruach HaChodesh (Holy Spirit) was given to others.  Let’s start in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) (OT).

Numbers 11

25  Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him; and He took of the Spirit who was upon him and placed Him upon the seventy elders. And when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do it again.

26  But two men had remained in the camp; the name of one was Eldad and the name of the other Medad. And the Spirit rested upon them (now they were among those who had been registered, but had not gone out to the tent), and they prophesied in the camp.

Numbers 27:18  So the LORD said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him;

Judges 6:34  So the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon; and he blew a trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called together to follow him.

1Samuel 10:10  When they came to the hill there, behold, a group of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him mightily, so that he prophesied among them.

I’ll bet you thought the Holy Spirit (Ruach HaChodesh) was only a New Testament thing.  Actually, it has been around since Genesis 1.  We are never taught this when going to Sunday church.  A side question to ask is why are we not taught this.

One interesting verse is found in Acts 8.  In it, we see where the Disciples laid hands on the people for them to receive the Ruach (Holy Spirit).

Acts 8

14  Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John,

15  who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.

16  For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

17  Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit.

Here, we see the Ruach being poured out on the believers.  They have been baptized, but are not yet filled with the Ruach (Holy Spirit).  This is not something that is automatically given to all believers.  In this same passage, we see Simon the sorcerer was also a believer, but he did not receive the Ruach.  He wanted to buy it to get its power.

What we see in these verses (and many others) is that GOD uses the Ruach to enable his children to do powerful things.  Whether this is prophesying or healing or speaking in tongues, or even raising people from the dead.  These are all blessings from GOD (YHVH).  When men are given the Ruach (Holy Spirit), they are given power and even wisdom.

Deuteronomy 34:9  Now Joshua the son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; and the sons of Israel listened to him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses.

The bottom line is that not only should prayer be an integral part of your walk, praying for the Ruach HaChodesh to lead you in all things will be beneficial to you and your family.  Seek HIS truth and wisdom in all that you do.
